Petrified Wood

Large pieces of fossil wood are common on the beach near Brora. This is a quite good specimen and shows the wood grain and a knot-hole where a branch would have been attached. Just as an aside: We were waiting (in one of the very friendly pubs, obviously) to catch a train on our departure from Brora. The locals already knew that I was there for the fossils so were keen to see what I had found. I had to unload my catch on the bar for their inspection. Most items recieved their approval and I remember the barman picking up the specimen pictured above and saying "It's stane bit its wid, I can jist imagine pittin a saw through that!" ( translation: it is stone but it is wood, I can just imagine putting a saw through that!)
